Chapter eleven
On Monday, there were several people waiting to come into the library when it opened. Basil opened the door, smiling politely and saying good morning as they all filed in.
Judith smiled and paused in front of him. âMorning, Basil, I wondered if youâd had any luck withâ¦â she looked around at the others filing in. âMy little problem.â
Basil laughed nervously, sure that anyone listening would think she was asking about something more personal than a house monster.
âAh, we think we might have a lead,â he said. He gestured for her to go inside and kept talking as he followed her. âWe might actually have the same thing in our house, so weâre seeing what the best way to proceed is and then weâll come and sort out yours.â
âOh, fantastic,â Judith said. She ran a hand through her messy hair. âMy husband has been so stressed with the noises, his company is trying to close this big important deal or something and heâs up at all hours on the phone, talking to someone in China or arguing with his boss, itâs all getting rather stressful.â
âIâm so sorry,â Basil said. âHave you noticed it stealing any other food?â
She shook her head. âNot after the last time. I think maybe it only liked Tim Tams?â
Basil chuckled and nodded. âWeâre hoping to have an answer for you pretty soon.â
âThank you.â She clasped his hand, turned around and left the library again. Ah, she must have just wanted to check in on how that was all going.
Basil went into the library and nodded to Lisbet, who was taking the first shift on the front desk. The delivery of new books was due to arrive mid-morning, and Basil found he was already nervous for whether or not thereâd be another lot of magic books delivered.
The phone rang, and Lisbet answered it.
Two of the people who had been waiting at the door watched Basil, and one shoved at the elbow of the other, pushing her forward. She had a long green skirt on, and a soft looking black jumper. Her hair fell around her shoulders in waves and she blinked at him nervously from behind clear framed glasses.
âHello, excuse me, are you Basil?â she asked.
âYes, I am.â Basil tapped his name tag as if he needed to prove it. âHow can I help?â
âRight, well, my nameâs Sadie, and this is Florence. We uh, we saw your appearance on SpectreWatch and we wanted to come and talk to you.â
Basilâs eyebrows shot up. âOh? You did? Oh, well, hello. I mean, I am working right nowâ¦â
âWe wonât take up much of your time,â Florence said, moving closer. âItâs just weâre not very connected to the witch community and we thought you looked really approachable. And uh, since you are a librarian and a witch we were wondering if you had such a thing as a magic book library?â
If Basil had been holding any books heâd have dropped them. âI beg your pardon?â His voice came out faint and sort of squeaky.
